The Hunger Games

In the first book of the trilogy, a dystopian society named Panem is established in North America after the destruction of the continent as we currently know it. This nation is built upon the idea of districts as a way to classify people. These twelve districts all have representatives compete in something called the Hunger Games each year in order to win a ration of food for their district. The games are quite brutal, as the rules are that the winner is the last one alive. The story specifically follows a girl named Katniss Everdeen through her journey in the Hunger Games after she volunteered to take her younger sister's place at the reaping ceremony. The simple cover design pays mind to a popular symbol used in the book, the mockingjay pin.

The Hunger Games is a great book to teach about the downfall of a utopian society and how these societies might sound like a good idea, but there are plenty of ways that they could go terribly wrong.
